What will your first grader learn?
Reading:
-Students coming into first grade in the fall should be reading on or above level 4.
-In the winter, the first grade proficiency level is 12.
-In the spring, a first grader should be reading on or above level 16.
-The students will learn a variety of different decoding strategies to help them figure out tricky words.
-The students will learn how to think critically about their reading to help their reading comprehension by hitting daily reading targets at Reader's Workshop.
Math:
In first grade, we focus on addition and subtraction fact fluency. The students will study addition and subtraction deeply, learning different kinds of strategies to help them to learn their facts. We will also learn how to graph data, time and money. The most important thing is that the students will use critical thinking and problem solving to learn math skills.
Writing:
The students will first review and practice how to write a solid, complete sentence that begins with a capital and ends with a period. They will learn how to use the sight word wall to help with spelling and they will learn different strategies to help them spell. The students will write informational pieces about themselves. They will learn how to use their 5 senses to describe in their writing and make their writing more interesting. They will learn how to write small moments where they use details to stretch out the story. First graders will learn how to research using informational texts, computers, iPads, and other technology to write informational text pieces on subjects connection to our learning expeditions.
